Unlike many of his earlier roles, Blue Hawaii marked a departure for Elvis. This was the first time his character wasn’t a singer or performer, yet Chad Gates still broke into song at unexpected moments, whether lounging on the beach or paddling a canoe. In one of the opening scenes, when Chad steps off the plane, you can faintly hear real-life fans screaming in the background. Hundreds of locals flocked to the set to catch a glimpse of Elvis, and the sound editors couldn’t completely mask their enthusiasm.
